About the Show
Music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, book by Joseph Stein.
Set in 1905 in a Jewish village in what is now Ukraine, this much-loved show tells the story of Tevye, a middle-aged milkman who has five daughters. Tevye is very committed to his Jewish faith and to tradition – but his daughters start to challenge tradition, because they want to marry for love. At the same time, the Jewish community is experiencing persecution and facing an uncertain future.
Full of timeless and universal themes, Fiddler on the Roof is funny, thought-provoking, heart-warming, tear-jerking and joyful. There are a great range of songs and musical numbers, covering a wide range of emotions and moods: moments of exuberance, contemplation, lament, delight – and even madness! Fiddler on the Roof won nine Tony Awards when it debuted in 1964, and has been consistently and deservedly popular with audiences around the world ever since.
